Meet the Interns, Part 2: Jessica Taylor

Gravatt internships are designed to introduce young adults to a nonprofit camp and conference center work environment, providing the opportunity to decide if this type of work is a possible career path. Interns at Gravatt also acquire valuable supplementary skills during their service period and make contact with potential future employers within and outside of camp and conference ministry. The Gravatt internship is a perfect opportunity for high school graduates, new college graduates, and college students taking a year off to determine their vocational path.

Gravatt has two news interns this fall, and we're excited to introduce them to you...

Where are you from?
I'm from Rock Hill, South Carolina, and I just graduated from Presbyterian College in May with my BA in International Studies.

Tell us about your family.
I'm the second of five! My mom worked at Gravatt in the 70's, and my sister has worked here too. We are members at the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour in Rock HIll.

You are no stranger to Gravatt either. You attended camp and many youth retreats here. You've even chaperoned youth events. What brought you to made you decide to come back?
Gravatt is a place for me that I've always loved and so having the opportunity to see a different side of things is something I was very excited to do!

What's your favorite Gravatt memory or tradition?
While Gravatt squares will always hold a special place in my heart, it's definitely the outdoor chapel. It's one of my favorite worship spaces.

Awesome! Gravatt does have a lot of great spaces for sanctuary. What do you hope to learn this year?
I'm really hoping to learn how to not only successfully market to an audience, but how development works and see how I can apply that in my future.

Any idea what you want to do for a career?
That's a good question. I'm still trying to figure it out, but I think I have a pretty good idea of where I want my life to take me.

How about for fun - what do you like to do?
I love to travel! But I also really enjoy reading, Netflix, baking.

Chocolate or vanilla?
Definitely vanilla. It's like the blank palette of ice cream that you can add anything to.

Do you follow any sports team?
Being so close to Charlotte, I like the Hornets and the Panthers.

Do you have a hero?
This is a hard question and now Enrique Iglesias is stuck in my head. But right now, I'm going to have to go with whoever invented AC because it's August and it's hot.

No doubt! So we have a community night as a staff where we take turns hosting and cooking dinner. Do you like to cook?
I love to cook! I really like Italian food, so anything with pasta is my favorite.

Chocolate or vanilla?
Definitely vanilla. It's like the blank palette of ice cream that you can add anything to.

Interesting. Do you like animals?
Cats, bears, and hedgehogs are my favorites.

We don't have bears around here. How do feel about goats?
I think I could add goats to that list soon enough.

Oh good! Maximus, Caesar, Tim, and the gang will be happy to hear that. Anything else you want us to know about you?
I'm currently the reigning Spoons champion here. :-)

Editor's Note: Jessica whipped everyone at a rousing game of Spoons at the community dinner on her first day of work. There will be a rematch.
